Poker Tells in Online Games

In a land-based casino, many poker players can easily identify various poker tells. For example, there is an opponent who has been slouching suddenly sits up straight and there is another one who slowly takes a deep breath. There might be a poker player who unconsciously bites his lower lip each time he gets a full house. And another poker player who pinches his nose when his cards are not good enough. All these poker tells happen simply because human nature dictates that a person must have some form of physical manifestation of his emotional and mental state. In online poker, however, one cannot see the opponents taking a deep breath or scratching the head or sitting up straight. Does this mean that there are no poker tells that can be observed when one plays online poker? What is apparent is that there are no poker tells. But there are still physical manifestations of a player's emotional and mental state upon seeing his pocket cards and upon revealing the community cards. This implies that there are still poker tells even when the poker game is online. Here are some of the poker tells that one will encounter.

- The speed of checking - Each poker player has the option of clicking a predetermined action by using the "In Turn" button. When this button is utilized, one will notice that the poker player has rapidly made up his mind. Usually, if the action of such a fast decision is to "check", the cards held by the player are not much to go on.

- Instantaneous betting or raising - If the immediate action chosen by the poker player using the "In Turn" button is to either bet or raise, this meant that the poker player does not need to know the actions of the players before him. His decision is final, and that he must bet or raise. What does this usually mean?

- Drastic changes in speed of action - Some poker players seem to take forever in making a decision, and then, the decision is usually to fold or to check. But when such poker players suddenly becomes less sleepy, that is, they immediately make a decision during their turn, and the decision is either to bet or to raise, this may mean very strong hands.

- Betting patterns - Observing betting patterns seems more difficult online than in land-based casino. But the opposite is true. That is, betting patterns of poker players become obvious and distinct because such players bet more often. And since poker players play in multiple games, the tend to repeat their actions. This reveals the betting patterns.

The poker tells of the opponents become more obvious when these opponents are involved in multiple games. And a poker player who is serious about mastering poker tells must avoid playing several games simultaneously so that he can focus all his attention on one poker game.
