Poker General Rules

There are certain rules that are used to assess poker hands. Any would-be player should take note of these in order for him to evaluate his game plan and apply his expertise in the long run. The first rule is to know the rank of each card. Ace ranks the highest, followed by king, then queen, then jack. The number cards follows, ten being the highest down to two as the lowest.

Individual cards are used to assess hands that have no pairs, or other unique combinations, or in ranking equal hands. In this case the ace is ranked low in an ace to five and ace to six games. Second rule to note is that suits have no value/worth.

Suits are used mainly to determine a hand's category, particularly if it is a flush or a straight flush. In some cases like when two players have equal hands, apart from suit, they are tied and the pot is split between the two of them. There are also some instances when a suit is used to randomly select a player to deal. This ranking is called high card.

Five cards consists a hand. In some games when there are more than five cards per player, hands are then ranked by selecting a five-card subset as per the rules of the game. The five-card subset is compared to other players' five-card hands. The remaining card after the selection has no effect in deciding who the winner is.

A hand is ranked by category first, then by the individual card ranks. This makes even the least eligible hand in a particular category defeat all other hands in the lower categories. With two hands in the same category, their card ranks are used to break the tie. This is the only time that the card ranks are to be utilized.

A poker hand is a poker has whatever the order or arrangement it is presented and dealt. What's important is that the hand has all the key elements for it to be categorized as a winning or loosing hand.

Taking note of these simple basic rules in poker is essential. Players should always know how to read their cards in order to know their standing in the game. These are just the standard rules of poker and how the player will utilize these basics is up to him so long as he understands and plays the game fairly. Mastery is the key in order to succeed the next game he will play.
